Ebb And Flow: What Can We Learn From The Waves?

Just before 2024 ended, I went on a trip to La Union with my closest friends in an attempt to rid my mind of any unnecessary baggage that I didn’t want to bring into the new year. On our last day there, as I waited for the bright, orange sun to set, I sat on the beach and observed how the wind created creases on the water’s surface over and over again. I went on this trip to avoid thinking, but, at this particular time, I couldn’t help but come to a realization - waves come and go, often kissing sandy shores before eventually retreating back into the ocean’s depths. “That’s sad”, I whispered under my breath, but the thought disappeared quickly as night slowly swallowed the sun. And, it wouldn’t resurface till a few months later.

In January, during a random conversation with my brother about our village’s seasonal basketball league and how the people we once looked up to appear less and less due to old age and illness, the thought from La Union, like the sun finally rising after the darkness of night, crept back into my mind. “This inevitable cycle of ebb and flow is universal, repeated and translated across the globe - even in basketball”, I concluded. With around roughly 550 players and an average career length of 4.5 years, waves go as quickly as they come in the National Basketball Association. The inevitability of this phenomenon doesn't make it any easier for either the waves or the players though, as the pain of loss continues to sting even after the destined divorce.

This transient reality became even more apparent to me as I watched the NBA celebrate All-Star Weekend where new names continue to replace established ones. Although still there, generational superstars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant have obviously started to decline, like waves finally returning to the ocean. In their place, new waves wash up on shore, hoping to leave lasting legacies of their own. But, legacies aren't built with just a basketball. And, how large of a legacy can one realistically leave in such a fleeting amount of time?

Brands - athletes are brands themselves - need to make the most of their time in the spotlight to guarantee both immediate and long-term success. They can successfully do this by building rapport and relationships with their respective audiences - relationships that remain robust even after the waves subside. But, this is easier said than done. The world has changed and evolved over time, introducing new ways to build bridges between brands and consumers. Are they equipped to navigate this unfamiliar, and possibly intimidating, landscape?

As 2025 marches into a blistering summer, and as friends share photos of beautiful beach trips on social media, I am once again reminded of watching the waves during that one afternoon in La Union. Like waves eventually returning to the sea, or athletes regressing in their sport, I find it inevitable that brands lose relevance over time. That’s just how things are, but that isn’t an excuse to leave lackluster legacies. The rise of technology has, without a doubt, changed the landscape of marketing. It can be intimidating, to say the least. But, technology is also responsible for opening new and exciting opportunities. With the right approach, brands can harness these advancements to not only stay relevant but to dominate their industries. By embracing innovation, adapting to trends, and leveraging data-driven insights, businesses can create lasting legacies and build connections that stand the test of time. The thought of this possibility gives me hope that maybe our cycle of transience isn’t something to feel melancholic about. Instead, it’s a reminder to make the most of the time that we do have, no matter how brief - something we all need to hear every now and then.
